NASA confirms 'Super-Earth' that could hold life

WASHINGTON: In another step toward finding Earth-like planets that may hold life, NASA has said the Kepler space telescope has confirmed its first-ever planet in a habitable zone outside our solar system.
French astronomers earlier this year confirmed the first rocky exoplanet to meet key requirements for sustaining life. But Kepler-22b, initially glimpsed in 2009, is the first the US space agency has been able to confirm.

Confirmation means that astronomers have seen it crossing in front of its star three times. But it doesn't mean that astronomers know whether life actually exists there, simply that the conditions are right.
Such planets have the right distance from their star to support water, plus a suitable temperature and atmosphere to support life.
'We have now got good planet confirmation with Kepler-22b,' said Bill Borucki, Kepler principal investigator at NASA Ames Research Center.
'We are certain that it is in the habitable zone and if it has a surface, it ought to have a nice temperature,' he told reporters on Monday.
Spinning around its star some 600 light years away, Kepler-22b is 2.4 times the size of the Earth, putting it in class known as 'super-Earths,' and orbits its Sun-like star every 290 days.
Its near-surface temperature is presumed to be about 72 degrees 22 Celsius. Scientists do not know, however, whether the planet is rocky, gaseous or liquid.
The planet's first 'transit,' or star crossover, was captured shortly after NASA launched its Kepler spacecraft in March 2009.
NASA also announced that Kepler has uncovered 1,094 more potential planets, twice the number it previously had been tracking, according to research being presented at a conference in California this week.
Kepler is NASA's first mission in search of Earth-like planets orbiting suns similar to ours, and cost the US space agency about USD 600 million.
It is equipped with the largest camera ever sent into space -- a 95-megapixel array of charge-coupled devices -- and is expected to continue sending information back to Earth until at least November 2012.
Kepler is searching for planets as small as Earth, including those orbiting stars in a warm, habitable zone where liquid water could exist on the surface of the planet.
The latest confirmed exoplanet that could support life brings to three the total number confirmed by global astronomers.

Facebook Hires IIT-Delhi Student For Rs 65 Lakh a Year

Social networking site Facebook will now have an employee from the Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi.

After trying - and failing - to recruit students from the institute last year, Facebook came back to the campus this year and chose 21-year-old Ankur Dahiya, a student of computer science engineering.

Dahiya's annual salary package is around Rs 65 lakh.

"Ever since I heard Facebook would come to recruit, I wanted to get in. It was a long-standing dream. My parents were obviously elated," said Dahiya, who belongs to Rohtak in Haryana.

This is the first time that Facebook has recruited a student from IIT-Delhi. The social networking giant had hired a student from IIT-Chennai last year.

The company, started in February 2004, has scouted for talent at many other IIT campuses in India this year. Unlike last year when it hired only two students from India, Facebook is eyeing the country as a talent hub this time around.

Dahiya will be placed in Palo Alto, California as a programmer after he finishes his course next year.

"The interview and the test were completely subject-based. They asked me to do some encoding and programming," said Dahiya, whose all-India rank in the IIT-JEE exam was 56.

Facebook was unable to hire any student last year as they expressed a desire to come to the campus a tad too late.

This time around, however, they were in the first batch of employers.

Mammoth To Be Brought Back To Life In Five Years

 The woolly mammoth, which became extinct 10,000 years ago, will now be brought back to life from a cloned bone marrow within five years, scientists have claimed.

Scientists from Russia's Sakha republic's mammoth museum and Japan's Kinki University will launch a joint research in 2012 in a bid to recreate the giant animal, the Daily Mail reported citing Kyodo News.
The researchers say it may be possible to clone a woolly mammoth after they found a well-preserved bone marrow in a thigh bone recovered in Siberia.
By replacing the nuclei of egg cells from an elephant with those taken from the mammoth's marrow cells, embryos with mammoth DNA can be produced.
The embryos will be planted into elephant wombs for delivery as the two species are close relatives.
For scientists involved in research since the 1990s, finding nuclei with undamaged mammoth genes has been a challenge.
Many areas in eastern Russia -- that usually remains frozen -- thawed leading to the discovery of a number of frozen mammoths, the report said.

Hrithik Helps Sanjay To Quit Smoking

While it's been a year since he gave up smoking, Hrithik Roshan is trying to help his colleagues in the industry kick the butt too. The latest is that the actor presented a copy of 'The Easy Way To Stop Smoking' by Allen Carr to Sanjay Dutt, during the shoot of AGNEEPATH in the city, on Sunday.

The book proved to be handy for the star as it helped him banish the cancer stick for the sake of his kids, Hrehaan and Hridaan. A source reveals that the subject of smoking came up when the two actors were chatting in between shots during the previous schedule.

"Sanjay spoke about how he avoided lighting up in the presence of his twins, Shahraan and Iqra. That's when Hrithik recalled quitting the habit last August, after reading Allen Carr's book. And he promised to give the actor a copy when they met during the next schedule," recalls our source, adding when leaving from home for the shoot, Hrithik ensured that he had taken a copy for his co-actor.

Predictably, Sanjay was surprised when Hrithik handed him the book. "When Sanjay arrived at the location, Hrithik carried the book to give it to him immediately. Sanjay thanked Hrithik and hugged him as a gesture of appreciation and concern," says our source.

Reportedly, Hrithik had taken to smoking earlier as his character Ethan was required to light up in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's GUZAARISH. However, after the film ended, the actor continued to smoke off screen as well, though he was careful to avoid smoking at home to ensure that his sons didn't see him light up.

"It took him a while to quit. Eventually, it was Allan Carr's book that helped him kick the butt," our source recalls, adding, "Since August 5 of last year he hasn't lit up even once."

We wonder if Hrithik will soon be handing out a copy of this book to his good friend Shahrukh Khan as well. The only time SRK kept his smoking in check was post his shoulder surgery in the US over seven years ago. And Sanjay in turn could hand out copies to his close chums Ajay Devgn and Salman Khan.
